Here is a great card trick that is based largely in misdirection. It requires a little bit of set up, but with only a few minutes practice you should be able to effectively perform this successfully in front of any audience. This is a big hit with kids, as it doesn’t require any special sleight of hand moves, and it’s pretty simple once you figure it out.

This is how the trick will seem to your astounded audience. You take three Aces: Spades, Clubs, and Diamonds. You hold them out, showing them to the audience. Then you position them on top of the deck, and jumble up and cut the deck quite a lot of times, ensuring that they have been consistently dispersed.

You then ask a volunteer to come up and hunt for the Ace of Diamonds. They will look in vain, as they won’t be able to come across it. If you like, you can get an additional audience member to come up and search, but they too will be unsuccessful. Then you pull the Ace of Diamonds out of your shirt pocket. (Or your back pocket, or shoe, or wherever.)

Here’s how to set the ruse up. First discover all the Aces. Then put the Ace of Diamonds in your pocket (or shoe or wherever) beforehand. Then lay the other Aces on top of the deck. When you drag the three Aces off the top, and fan them out, make sure to hold the Ace of Hearts in the middle. If you place both other cards on either side of the Ace of Hearts, it will look like the Ace of Diamonds to the audience.

How you sound this is important. If you bring up beforehand that you are going to make the Ace of Diamonds disappear, they will be looking much more directly. But if you just start of by telling what you are doing, and then name the three cards (Ace of Clubs, Spades, and Diamonds) they will likely have faith in you, and not look too closely at the three cards.

One way that can incredibly help is as you are shuffling and cutting the deck, is to disclose some long winded story about how diamonds have some kind of captivating power, and in the old days when they were choosing the shapes for cards, they almost didn’t choose diamonds because people were always stealing them, or they were always disappearing or something. That way, when they start wondering about the Ace of Diamonds, it will already be secreted someplace in the deck, or so they think. Have fun with this trick.

This is a great up close and impromptu magic trick that is quick and easy to learn, yet will always amaze your friends. You can do this trick by itself, or as an introduction to some other tricks. It’s a good idea do this with a couple other simple card tricks, as you need a cheap deck of cards as the main prop. You wouldn’t want anybody accusing you of being a one-trick wonder, would you?

Here’s how the trick will look to you friends. You’re sitting around a table at a party or a bar, talking about whatever. You mention in an “oh by the way,” fashion that you’ve recently picked up some telekinetic skills. Obviously, their conversation will come to a dead halt as they demand a demonstration of your newly found gifts. Of course, since you’ve just learned these powerful skills, you can only move small objects. Of course, you tell them that you haven’t learned to lift up pool tables or anything like that.

You produce a deck of cards, take one out at random, and place it on the back of your hand. You invoke the magical powers of Zeus, or your favorite god whenever you use your telekinetic powers, and the card magically starts to bend according to your powerful mental will. After the card has bent according to your immense psychic energy, you claim that you have only studied enough to bend one card, and you need a rest. After that just return to talking about whatever you were talking about before you performed this magnificent illusion.

Here’s the trick. Before you announce your special powers, rub some water on the back of the hand that you are going to place the card on. You’ll need an inexpensive, non-laminated deck of cards. The cheap cards will be porous, and will naturally soak up that water that you have deftly rubbed on your hand. When it does this, it will naturally bend toward the curvature of your hand, amazing your friends in the process.

This is one of those tricks that require you talk a good game both before and after the illusion. If you only call attention to the card, and bend it for them, they’ll likely know that something is up. But if you build it up, and tell an interesting story beforehand, (get it, before hand?) and quickly cover it up with another story after the fact, it will go over much better.

Of course, if you know any other simple card tricks (that don’t require the whole deck, sine you’ve just ruined one of the cards) this would be a great time to pull them out. You can do many more tricks that don’t require you to be playing with a full deck. This is a great introduction to some fantastic tricks that you can entertain your friends with, or if you get lucky, start to attract a crowd of eager onlookers. Have fun.
